How to Use the Song Key Finder
Enter at least two chords from the song or progression you want to analyze.
You can type chords directly, for example:

or:

How the Song Key Finder Works
A musical key contains a set of notes and chords that naturally belong together.
For example, the diatonic chords of C major are:
C – Dm – Em – F – G – Am – Bdim
If your progression contains:
C – G – Am – F
all four chords belong naturally to C major.
That creates strong evidence for C Major.
However, simply counting matching chords is not always enough. The finder also considers useful tonal clues such as tonic emphasis, dominant relationships, chord order, and whether the first or last chord supports a likely tonal center.
The tool also allows some chromatic or borrowed chords rather than assuming that every song must use only diatonic harmony.
Understanding the Most Likely Key
The main result shows the key that best fits the progression entered.
For example:

The match percentage should be interpreted as a compatibility score, not as a scientific probability that the song is definitely in that key.
A high match generally means that most or all of the entered chords belong naturally to the key and that the progression contains useful tonal evidence.
A lower score can mean:
- one or more chords are chromatic;
- the progression is incomplete;
- several keys fit equally well;
- the song uses modal harmony;
- a borrowed chord is present;
- the progression changes key.
Roman Numeral Analysis
The tool also translates the chord progression into Roman numerals.
For example:
C – G – Am – F
in C major becomes:
I – V – vi – IV
Roman numerals show the function of each chord relative to the key rather than its absolute note name.
This is useful because the same harmonic pattern can appear in many keys.
For example:
G – D – Em – C
is also:
I – V – vi – IV
but in G major.

Major vs Minor Keys
A major key and its relative minor use the same collection of notes.

Because of this overlap, some progressions can fit both keys.
A progression containing:
Am – F – C – G
could strongly suggest A minor, but many of the same chords also belong to C major.

What Is the Relative Key?
Every major key has a relative minor, and every minor key has a relative major.
Examples include:

- F Major ↔ D Minor
Relative keys share the same key signature but use different tonal centers.
The result displays the relative key because it is often the strongest alternative when a progression is harmonically ambiguous.
Diatonic and Out-of-Key Chords
A diatonic chord is built from notes that naturally belong to the key.
The Song Key Finder shows the expected diatonic chords for the strongest key candidate and identifies which of your entered chords match them.
It also flags chords that fall outside the basic diatonic set.
An out-of-key chord does not automatically mean the analysis is wrong.
Songs frequently use:
- borrowed chords;
- secondary dominants;
- modal mixture;
- chromatic passing harmony;
- temporary tonicization;
- modulation.
For example, a song can clearly be in C major and still contain an occasional chord that is not part of the basic C-major scale.
The tool therefore treats chromatic chords as evidence to investigate rather than automatically rejecting the key.
Why Can Several Keys Fit the Same Chords?
Some chord collections naturally overlap multiple keys.
A short progression may not provide enough harmonic information to identify one tonal center with certainty.
Relative major and minor keys are especially easy to confuse because they contain the same basic notes and diatonic chords.
Progressions built mostly from common chords can also match neighboring keys.
For a stronger result, enter more of the progression when possible, especially chords that appear at:
- phrase endings;
- the beginning of the chorus;
- the end of the song;
- strong cadences;
- repeated resolution points.
These areas often reveal which chord functions as the tonic.

Accuracy and Limitations
A chord-based key finder provides a harmonic estimate based on the information you enter.
It cannot always determine:
- modal songs;
- songs with frequent key changes;
- ambiguous progressions;
- incomplete harmony;
- music centered on modes rather than major/minor tonality;
- the exact tonal center when relative keys are equally plausible.
The tool also does not listen to an audio file or automatically detect chords from a recording. Its analysis is based on the chord progression you provide.
