How to Read the Live Pitch Graph
The graph shows pitch vertically and time horizontally.
When your voice rises, the pitch line moves upward. When your pitch falls, it moves downward. If you sustain a note steadily, the line should stay close to the same note level, although small natural movements are expected.
A pitch graph can help you notice patterns that are difficult to hear while you are singing. For example, you may discover that you:
- approach a note from below;
- drift flat near the end of a sustained note;
- overshoot higher notes;
- slide between pitches;
- use a wider or narrower vibrato than expected.
The graph should be treated as feedback, not as a judgment of vocal quality. Singing involves many characteristics that cannot be summarized by pitch tracking alone.
Current Note, Frequency, and Cents
The monitor displays several values at the same time because each answers a different question.
Current note shows the nearest musical note, such as A3, C4, or F#4.
Frequency shows the detected fundamental frequency in Hertz. For example, A4 is commonly referenced at 440 Hz.
Cents deviation tells you how far your current pitch is from the center of the nearest equal-tempered note. There are 100 cents in one semitone.
A reading such as:
A4 — 440 Hz — +2 cents
means the pitch is very close to A4.
A reading such as:
A4 — -24 cents
means the detected pitch is below the center of A4.

How to Tell If You Are Singing in Tune
Singing “in tune” does not require your voice to remain at exactly one mathematical frequency every millisecond.
Human voices naturally move. Vibrato, consonants, note attacks, slides, and small changes in vocal-fold vibration all create variation.
For practice, focus on the overall pattern.
If the pitch line repeatedly settles close to the target note, your intonation is generally more consistent than if it remains substantially above or below the target.

The useful question is whether the movement is controlled and appropriate for the exercise.
When practicing a plain sustained tone, try to keep the center of your pitch near the intended note. When practicing vibrato, look for a reasonably consistent oscillation around that center rather than expecting the graph to remain flat.

Accuracy and Limitations
Real-time pitch detection depends heavily on the quality of the incoming sound.
Results can become unstable because of:
- background conversation;
- music playing nearby;
- strong room echo;
- fan or traffic noise;
- very weak microphone input;
- clipping caused by excessive volume;
- breathy or irregular sounds;
- fast transitions;
- overlapping frequencies;
- strong harmonic content.
Octave errors can also happen when the detector locks onto a harmonic instead of the intended fundamental frequency.
