Understanding Cents

A cent is the smallest standard unit used to measure musical pitch differences.

  • 100 cents = 1 semitone
  • 0 cents means the note is perfectly in tune.
  • Positive values indicate the pitch is sharp.
  • Negative values indicate the pitch is flat.

By default, the calculator uses the international tuning standard of A4 = 440 Hz, which is the reference pitch used for most modern instruments and recordings.

The calculator also includes a convenient 432 Hz preset, since some musicians prefer using that reference for artistic or personal reasons. Selecting the preset simply changes the tuning reference used for calculations—it does not change the underlying conversion process.

The Hz to Note Converter performs all calculations using Equal Temperament tuning, where A4 = 440.00 Hz by default.

The built-in tone generator uses the browser’s Web Audio API to synthesize a mathematically accurate sine wave rather than playing prerecorded audio samples. Smooth fade-in and fade-out envelopes are applied automatically to eliminate clicks when playback starts or stops.
