How to Use the Singing Voice Test
For the most useful result, test notes you can sing comfortably rather than the most extreme sound you can produce.
Start in a quiet room and keep your microphone a reasonable distance from your mouth. Begin the microphone test and sing a comfortable low note on a steady vowel such as “ah.” Hold the pitch long enough for the tool to identify a stable note.
Once your lowest note is captured, repeat the process with a comfortable high note. The test then compares your endpoints and calculates the distance between them.

How the Singing Voice Test Works
Musical pitch can be represented both as a note name and as a frequency measured in Hertz.
For example, the commonly used reference pitch A4 equals 440 Hz. Notes an octave above have approximately twice the frequency, while notes an octave below have approximately half the frequency.
During microphone testing, the tool analyzes the incoming audio signal in your browser and looks for a stable fundamental pitch. It converts that frequency to the nearest musical note and tracks whether the note is stable enough to use.

The tool does not simply use a brief pitch spike as your range boundary. A sustainable note is usually more meaningful when evaluating singing range.
How to Read Your Result
A result such as:
G3–C5
means G3 was recorded as your lowest comfortable note and C5 as your highest.
The difference between those notes can also be expressed in semitones and octaves. Twelve semitones equal one octave.
The test may then show an estimated category such as:
- Bass
- Baritone
- Tenor
- Contralto / Alto
- Mezzo-Soprano
- Soprano
These labels are useful starting points, but range overlap between voice types is common.

Vocal Range Is Not the Same as Voice Type
One of the most important things to understand about a singing voice test is that vocal range alone does not definitively determine voice type.
Two singers can reach many of the same pitches while having different comfortable registers, vocal weights, timbres, and transition points.
Professional voice classification may consider factors such as:
- Comfortable tessitura
- Register transitions
- Vocal weight
- Tone quality
- Resonance
- Passaggio
- Training and technique

Should Falsetto and Head Voice Count?
That depends on what you are trying to measure.
If your goal is to discover every pitch you can physically produce, you may include notes from different registers. But if you are trying to understand your practical singing range, it is usually more useful to focus on notes you can sustain with reasonable control.
A very high falsetto note that appears for a fraction of a second may technically expand your maximum range, but it may not represent the range you would comfortably use in a song.

Tips for a More Accurate Singing Voice Test
Warm up gently before testing. Do not force your voice lower or higher simply to produce a larger result.
Try several passes and look for consistency. If one test says C3–G5 and another suddenly shows A1–E7, the unusual result may have come from background noise, vocal fry, a harmonic, or an unstable pitch.
For better microphone detection:
- Test in a quiet room.
- Avoid instrumental music in the background.
- Sing one steady vowel.
- Hold each note instead of sliding rapidly through it.
- Keep a consistent microphone distance.
- Retest any result that feels unrealistic.
- Stop immediately if singing causes discomfort.

Accuracy and Limitations
An online Singing Voice Test can provide a useful estimate of your range, but it cannot replace evaluation by an experienced voice teacher or vocal coach.
Microphone quality, room noise, pitch stability, technique, vocal fatigue, and the register being used can all affect detection.
The estimated voice type should therefore be treated as a reference point, not a clinical, medical, or definitive professional classification.
Voice classification can also change as technique develops. A singer who has not trained their upper register, for example, may initially measure a smaller range than they are eventually capable of using comfortably.
