Voice Type and Vocal Range
What does the Voice Type Test measure?
The Voice Type Test uses measurable information such as detected pitch and vocal range to compare your result with broad reference ranges associated with common singing voice categories.
It is intended as an educational estimate rather than a complete professional voice classification.
Is vocal range the same as voice type?
No.
Vocal range describes the span between the lowest and highest pitches you can produce under the conditions of the test.
Voice type is broader. A professional assessment may also consider tessitura, register transitions, timbre, vocal weight, comfort, technique, and repertoire.
Can an online test determine my exact voice type?
Not by itself.
A browser-based tool can measure useful acoustic information, including pitch, frequency, and approximate range. It cannot fully assess every characteristic used in professional singing-voice classification.
The result is best used as a starting point for understanding your voice.
What is the Fach system?
Fach is a classical operatic voice-classification system that includes multiple categories and subcategories based on vocal characteristics and repertoire demands.
Online tools generally use broader familiar labels rather than attempting to reproduce the full professional Fach classification process.
Why does my result differ from my voice teacher’s assessment?
A qualified voice teacher can listen to and evaluate factors that a browser-based range test cannot fully assess, including tessitura, registration, vocal weight, timbre, technique, and comfort.
If the two results differ, discuss the difference with your teacher and use the online result as additional information rather than a replacement for their assessment.
Why do I sometimes get a different result on another day?
Some variation between sessions is normal.

Frequency is measured in hertz, or Hz.
A frequency value describes how many cycles a periodic sound completes per second. For musical sounds, frequency can be mapped to a corresponding or nearest musical note.
How are Hz and musical notes related?
Musical notes correspond to frequency values.
In standard equal temperament, A4 is commonly referenced as 440 Hz, and other note frequencies can be calculated mathematically relative to that reference.

Do the converters and calculators use my microphone?
Tools that use values you type in—such as Hz-to-note, note-to-frequency, semitone, and octave calculators—do not need microphone input for those calculations.
Microphone permission is only necessary for tools that analyze live audio.
Why can a calculator result be more consistent than a microphone result?
A calculator performs a mathematical operation using the values you enter.
A microphone tool first has to detect information from a real audio signal. That detection can be affected by noise, microphone quality, unstable pitch, clipping, and other recording conditions.
Why might a Song Key Finder result be uncertain?
Automatically estimating a song’s key can be more complex than identifying a single note.
A song may contain:
- changing chords
- multiple simultaneous notes
- key changes
- modal harmony
- non-diatonic notes
- percussion or background noise
- tuning differences
For these reasons, some song-key results should be treated as estimates rather than absolute determinations.

There is no single accuracy number that applies to every tool, microphone, voice, or device.

Why won’t the tool detect very low or very high notes?
Detection can become more difficult when the signal is weak, unstable, distorted, or outside the range your microphone reproduces well.
Very low or high pitches may also contain strong overtones that can make pitch analysis more challenging.
Trying again with a clearer sustained note and a quieter environment may help.
