What Is Middle C?

Middle C (C4) is the universal reference point — the C in the middle of a standard piano keyboard. It sits right at the boundary between tenor and soprano ranges. Male voices typically sing below it; female voices above it.

📊

Range vs. Tessitura

The ranges shown are maximum comfortable ranges — not the full reach including strained notes. Tessitura (the zone that sounds best) is typically 2–4 semitones narrower at each end of the range.

🔬

Why Ranges Overlap

Soprano and mezzo ranges both include notes like A4 and B4. The difference is not which notes you can reach — it's where your voice sounds best. Tessitura and passaggio location determine voice type, not range alone.
