The Three Male Voice Types
Male voices are divided into three main categories based on range, passaggio location, and tessitura. The vast majority of male singers fall into one of these three types:
| Voice Type | Range | Passaggio | Tessitura | % of Males |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tenor | C3–C5 | E4–F4 | E3–A4 | ~30% |
| Baritone | G2–G4 | C4–D4 | A2–E4 | ~60% |
| Bass | E2–E4 | A3–Bb3 | E2–B3 | ~10% |
The most reliable method: find your passaggio — the point where your voice shifts from chest to head register. Slide slowly up a scale on "ah." If the shift feels like it happens around E4–F4, you're likely a tenor. Around C4–D4 means baritone. Around A3–Bb3 points to bass.
Tenor — The High Male Voice
The tenor is the highest standard male voice type. Tenors are defined by a passaggio at E4–F4, a tessitura in the upper-middle male range, and a characteristically bright, forward tonal quality. The tenor "high C" (C5) is one of the most celebrated notes in opera.
Tenor Subtypes
- Lyric Tenor: Light, agile, beautiful upper range. C3–C5. Famous examples: Ed Sheeran, Bruno Mars, Juan Diego Flórez.
- Spinto Tenor: Fuller power than lyric, still capable of high notes. Plácido Domingo, Luciano Pavarotti, Josh Groban.
- Heldentenor: The rarest tenor — Wagner heroic roles. Heavy baritone-like weight with sustained high notes. Jon Vickers.
Key indicator: If you can sing G4–A4 with relative ease and brightness, and your voice shifts registers around E4–F4, you're likely a tenor.
Baritone — The Middle Male Voice
The baritone is the most common male voice type — roughly 60% of male singers are baritones. Defined by a passaggio at C4–D4 and a tessitura in the warm middle-low male range, the baritone voice has a characteristic warmth and roundness that neither tenors nor basses possess.
Baritone Subtypes
- Lyric Baritone: Warm, beautiful tone. The most common baritone Fach. Frank Sinatra, Michael Bublé, Thomas Hampson.
- Kavalierbariton: Elegant, aristocratic. Don Giovanni, Count roles. Slightly fuller than lyric.
- Dramatic Baritone: Heavy, powerful, dark. Villains and authority figures in opera. Dmitri Hvorostovsky, Elvis Presley.
Key indicator: If your voice sounds best in the G2–D4 range, your register shifts around C4–D4, and G4 requires significant effort, you're likely a baritone.
Bass — The Low Male Voice
The bass is the lowest male voice type. Basses have a passaggio at A3–Bb3, a tessitura in the extreme low male range, and a characteristically dark, weighty tone that retains resonance in notes where baritones go thin. True basses — especially basso profondo — are rare.
Bass Subtypes
- Bass-Baritone: Hybrid — darker than baritone, more upper range than true bass. Johnny Cash, Bryn Terfel.
- Basso Cantante: Beautiful, singing bass. Rich low notes with lyrical quality. Barry White, Josh Turner, Samuel Ramey.
- Basso Profondo: The lowest voice in existence. Extraordinary resonance below E2. René Pape, Avi Kaplan.
Key indicator: If your voice retains full resonance below E2, your register shifts around A3–Bb3, and your voice sounds most characteristic in the D2–B3 range, you're likely a bass.
Tenor vs Baritone: The Key Test
The most common male voice classification confusion. See our full comparison guide, but the quick version:
- Slide up a scale. Shift at E4–F4 = tenor. Shift at C4–D4 = baritone.
- Sing G4. Does it feel in the pocket (tenor) or slightly effortful (baritone)?
- Tone color: bright and ringing (tenor) vs warm and rounded (baritone)?

Bass vs Baritone: The Key Test
- Slide up a scale. Shift at C4–D4 = baritone. Shift at A3–Bb3 = bass.
- Sing E2. Full and resonant = bass indicator. Thin and crackly = baritone at limit.
- Tone color: darker and heavier than a baritone even on the same notes?
